FAQs
Find answers to common questions to help you get started and move your project forward.
What am I purchasing from Traffic Garden Designs?
Traffic Garden Designs creates and sells ready-to-use traffic garden plan sets. When you purchase a plan, you are acquiring a one-time license to use that professionally designed layout for a single installation. The plan defines the street network, scale, and key elements needed so your team and project can move forward with clarity and confidence. Your purchase also includes light customization to fit your site; if your site differs from standard sizing, we will provide a revised set of drawings reflecting those conditions.
How much does a traffic garden cost to install?
Traffic garden costs vary based on size, existing surface condition, required repairs, and regional differences. Our plan sets help make budgeting more predictable by clearly defining scope, materials, and layout. Through our contractor network, streamlined designs, and material specifications, we can provide a preliminary $/SF estimate and connect you with local SealMaster contractors for project pricing. In general, installations start at approximately $35,000 and increase with project complexity.
How do I find a suitable site for a traffic garden?
Many great traffic garden sites are already in plain sight, they’re just underused or abandoned. Look for existing paved areas such as old or cracked tennis or basketball courts, unused parking lots, school blacktops, or wide asphalt spaces in parks and housing communities. The ideal site is relatively flat, has a continuous paved surface, and is free from heavy vehicle traffic. Size can vary: smaller sites work well for beginner-focused layouts, while larger areas allow for more complex networks and advanced skill-building. It’s also helpful to consider visibility, access to amenities, and how the space will be accessed. If you’re unsure, we can review your site and help match it with the most appropriate layout.
What does a single-use license mean, and how does it apply to purchased plan sets?
A single-use license allows you to install the traffic garden design at one site. Each additional site requires its own license to ensure the plans are used as intended and properly supported.
Can I purchase more than one license for a plan set?
Yes. If you are planning multiple installations, additional licenses can be purchased for each site. This is a great option for school districts, municipalities, or organizations rolling out multiple traffic gardens. Get in touch to discuss the discounted fee.
Will the plan sets be tailored to fit my specific site?
Yes, if necessary. While our plan sets are designed around common site sizes, we know that real-world spaces and courts can vary quite a bit. Your purchase includes light tailoring to fit your site’s specific dimensions or constraints. Think of it like buying a well-made suit with personal tailoring included. We start with a strong, proven design and adjust it to fit your space properly. These adjustments may include shifts in layout, alignment, or spacing to respond to site conditions. For sites with more complex constraints or significant modifications, additional customization may be discussed separately.
Who are traffic gardens for: kids or everyone?
Traffic gardens are designed for a wide range of ages and abilities. Younger children build early riding and pedestrian skills, while older elementary-age kids develop more advanced decision-making, route choice, and traffic awareness. Many sites also support scooters, adaptive bicycles, and community programming making them welcoming, flexible spaces for a range of ages.If you’re interested in scaling a design for adult use, we’d be happy to discuss options to customize a design.
How long does it take to install a traffic garden?
Once the site is prepared (including any crack or surface repairs) installation is typically completed in 3–5 days, depending on size and complexity as well as installation crew size. Timelines may extend due to material curing or weather, so planning and coordination are key to keeping things on track.
Do I need a professional contractor to install a traffic garden?
Yes, we strongly recommend working with an experienced contractor to ensure proper surface preparation, layout accuracy, and long-term durability. Traffic Garden Designs can help connect you with qualified installers through the SealMaster network.
How long will a surface-applied traffic garden last?
With proper surface preparation, quality materials, and regular maintenance, a traffic garden can last 7–10 years. Lifespan will vary depending on site conditions, weather, and whether vehicles access the space.
