Huntington Park Traffic Garden
Columbia, Maryland
This project transformed a decommissioned basketball court into a vibrant, colorful traffic garden that now serves as both a place for local programs and a community gathering space. Located within a neighborhood park and directly adjacent to the existing playground, the site was ideally positioned to expand opportunities for active play for local families and expanding the park's existing recreational amenities.
As the first traffic garden installed within the Howard County parks system, the project was developed through close collaboration with Howard County Parks and Recreation staff and the county's bicycle and pedestrian coordinator. The team worked together to refine the layout for the available space, and create a facility that would support bicycle education, and imaginative play for children of a wide range of ages.
Installation was completed within five days and included resealing the asphalt surface to create a fresh canvas for the traffic garden colors and pavement markings. Following completion, the project was celebrated with a well-attended ribbon-cutting ceremony and received extensive coverage from local media outlets, helping introduce the new facility to families across the community.

"I was involved with the installation of the first ever traffic garden in Huntington Park Columbia, Maryland. This project was done by a contractor that had never done a traffic garden before. They were able to do the project in five days because the drawings that were created by Fionnuala Quinn were so detailed. It was easy for this contractor that typically does tennis courts and pickleball courts to complete this project in five days."
